A very educational presentation with lots of insights from a professional photojournalist shooting many subjects ranging from war to prison. On behalf of ASMP Utah Mountain West and IPW, I want to thank Lori and suggest that anyone that has a chance to take classes or see her presentation, jump on it. Again, Thanks Lori, Cal Werry

ASMP and IPW Presents Photographer Lori Waselchuk
in Boise
7 pm, August 18
MK Nature Center
600 South Walnut Street
Boise, Idaho 83712
For August, ASMP Utah/Mountain West chapter will join with members of of Idaho Photographic Workshop to welcome Philadelphia-based photographer Lori Waselchuk to Boise. Lori will share the back-story of her award-winning documentary photographic project, Grace Before Dying, a moving chronicle of the prisoner-run hospice program at Angola State Penitentiary, Louisiana's maximum-security prison.
A life sentence means life at Angola, the Louisiana State Penitentiary. Because Louisiana has some of the toughest sentencing laws in the country, more than 85 percent of the 5,100 prisoners at Angola are expected to die there. Until the hospice program was created in 1998, prisoners died mostly alone and unattended in Angola’s prison hospital. But its nationally recognized hospice program, run by one staff nurse and a team of prisoner volunteers, has changed that.
Grace Before Dying is inspired by the volunteers, staff and patients involved with Angola’s hospice program. Waselchuk was granted rare access to the inmate community and her imagery celebrates the discovery that humanity and courage are possible even in an environment designed to isolate and punish.
Lori's presentation will track the evolution of the project, its origins, challenges and successes, and the opportunities it continues to present. A feature-length documentary about the Angola prison hospice, produced and narrated by Forrest Whitaker, airs on the new Oprah Network on July 28 at 7 p.m.
Lori's photographs have appeared in magazines and newspapers worldwide including Newsweek, LIFE, The New York Times, and The Los Angeles Times. She has produced photographs for several international aid organizations including CARE, the UN World Food Program, Médecins Sans Frontières, and The Vaccine Fund. She is a recipient of the Aaron Siskind Foundation’s 2009 Individual Photographer Fellowship; a 2008 Distribution Grant from the Documentary Photography Project of the Open Society Institute; the 2007 PhotoNOLA Review Prize; and the 2004 Southern African Gender and Media Award for Photojournalism.
